MSU approves housing and dining rate increase
EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The cost of housing an dining for incoming first-year students at Michigan State University is jumping by nearly seven percent.
It was a unanimous decisions from the school’s Board of Trustees during their meeting on Friday.

The 6.89% increase is reflective of the cost of inflation, according to Senior Vice President for Student Life and Engagement Vennie Gore.
Gore added that a majority of it will go toward a rise in food prices and providing different services for those who live on campus. The remaining funds brought in from the rate hike will be invested in the maintenance and renovation of Campbell Hall, one of the dorm buildings on campus.
Board of Trustees Chair Dan Kelly said the group took their time weighing the pros and cons before coming to a decision.
“We spent a significant amount of time on that issue,” Kelly said. “Our governance principle is to make sure that the administration convinces us that’s necessary. I belive it was a unanimous vote today, and the reason for that is because it’s needed and we were convinced by that from the administration. But we asked the questions and we spent a lot of time on it yesterday.”
MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz added that he and others want to keep the cost of attendance as low as possible.
