MSP: ‘Bomb’ in deadly standoff was fake

OTTO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who was shot and killed by police during a standoff near the Oceana-Muskegon county line Saturday had a fake bomb, Michigan State Police said.

The 44-year-old Oceana County man was shot and killed by a member of the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team after a “perceived threat,” MSP said. The standoff began around 3:30 p.m., neighbors told News 8.

Police say the man was along the side of the road by Nichols Road and Skeels Road, in the area of Otto Township and Blue Lake Township, and said he had a bomb strapped to his body. Troopers saw “an unknown device with wires attached to it,” and he said he was going to kill everyone, police said.

After several hours of police trying to negotiate with him, he was shot and killed, MSP said. A News 8 crew on scene heard a single shot around 7:45 p.m.

“EST negotiators attempted to negotiate with the man for several hours,” MSP Lt. Michelle Robinson said Saturday. “During the negotiations, there was a perceived threat from him, at which point a shot was fired by an EST member that struck the man.”

In a Sunday update, MSP said the device was not a bomb.

“After extensive efforts by the MSP Bomb Squad to render the device safe, it was discovered to be a hoax device,” it said in a social media post. “The incident remains under investigation.”
