Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) had her first trial at a rescue in this week's episode of Ms Marvel and it was… a little bit rough and ready.

It was only to be expected: our young Ms Marvel is charming and witty but definitely a 'learn as we go' kinda gal.

Her being rescued however… smoooth. Very smooth.

When her botched heroic attempt catches the attention of the DODC, Kamala finds herself in desperate need of an escape plan. It's a bit of a fumble to begin with, that is until heartthrob Kamran (Rish Shah) pulls up in a sleek black car, pops the door open and utters the words: "Get in."

If Kamala wasn't already crushing on him now would be the time.

His surprise attendance wasn't the only shocker of that episode. From the back passenger seat, a presence makes themselves known by calling Kamala's name, confident, bold. The voice follows with:

"I've been waiting a very long time to meet with you."

Under any other circumstances this would be creepy. A strange woman being so familiar with you is hardly comforting. However Kamala has sort of met her before – in her visions, which makes this in-person meet extra trippy for the teen.

Ms Marvel's second episode is peppered with ethereal visions in which the 'lady from the car' appears.

Originally we were led to assume that this was her great-grandmother, Aisha, or at least had some connections to Aisha and her disappearance.

Can you blame us? We too became obsessed with the mysterious elder after hearing the story involving her and her daughter (Kamala's grandmother) Sana.

As the family fable goes, during the civil war that followed Partition in India the Khan family were boarding a train leaving the city when Sana (then a toddler) got separated from the family.

Just as the train was leaving the station Sana returned, claiming to have found her way back by following the stars.

This sounds suspiciously similar to the way in which Kamala's powers present themselves. It isn't a reach to suggest the hard, crystallised light could be mistaken for stars by a child.

Coincidentally Sana's return also happens to be the moment when Aisha disappears for good.

After hearing that particular part of the story Kamala's bangles begin to glow and she finds herself absorbed in another vision that seems to pulsate with the sound of a train whistling and chugging along the tracks.

A figure of a woman with an outstretched hand appears before Kamala's eyes. The woman may be clouded in fog but we've got 20:20 vision when it comes to Marvel and it looks a hell of a lot like the woman from the car.

From then on, Kamala goes on a mission to dig deeper into the life story of her great-grandmother. Initially it feels as though we are about to get some answers when we see the woman in the car.

If you speculated that it could be Aisha with some sort of partial immortality you wouldn't be the only one, but nope. Misdirection at its best.

After her cryptic introduction, Kamran introduces her as his mother. This revelation comes as a shock considering the visions have heavily implied a link towards great-grandmother. However this doesn't make the latter untrue.

It was presumed that Kamala's visions are symptomatic of her gifts as she learns to control them which may still be true but what if Kamran's mother is using those as a means to connect with her, taking this opportunity to connect with Kamala about a matter of shared importance?

This would make Kamran's mother powered in some sense, which folds neatly into the theory that Kamala is Inhuman and that she may be too.

We know from the comics that Kamran is an Inhuman who possesses the power to emit glowing bioluminescent and biokinetic energy which he can channel into an explosive power. The two also have a love connection until he turns on her.

When talking to Radio Times about his comic book backstory, Rish Shah admitted that there was more to Kamran, teasing: "You'll have to wait and see."

It's a little too early to suggest that this is the way the story will go but the Inhuman ties would also explain Kamala's earlier scene with Bruno (Matt Lintz), in which they discover that the power isn't coming from the bangle but from within her.

Come on. Inhuman or what?

We may not have concrete answers about Kamala's powered origins but the surprise appearance of Kamran's mother does suggest those reveals are on their way soon.

Ms Marvel is out now on Disney+ with new episodes releasing weekly on Wednesdays.
