Ms. Marvel is one of the more colourful, vibrant entries into the MCU canon, however, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are opting for a grittier tone with their new film, Batgirl.

The six-episode show wrapped last week in a huge twist and has received positive reviews. However, the directing duo, who both helmed Ms. Marvel's first and last episodes, aren't stopping with one superhero origin story.

Speaking to Slash Film, El Arbi and Fallah talked about the contrast between the Disney+ show and the "darker" nature of DC's Batgirl.

"Well, the thing is that it's also an origin story, but obviously, Batgirl is in Gotham City, so it's going to be much darker than Ms. Marvel and our main character is older. I mean, she's not a teenager, she already has a job," El Arbi said.

"But I think that we're still going to try to have the same visual vibrancy that is our trademark, you could say, and homages to the comic book, homages also to the animated series of Batman, and the Tim Burton movies. So that's what we're trying to do with that, but obviously, it's going to be a bit darker than Ms. Marvel's world."

Batgirl is scheduled to be released on HBO Max sometime later this year, with no confirmed release date as of yet. The movie, which wrapped filming in March, stars Leslie Grace as the titular character, whose real name is Barbara Gordon.

Playing her dad, Police Commissioner James Gordon, is JK Simmons — who reprised his role as J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: No Way Home last year. Michael Keaton will return to his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman for the first time since Tim Burton's 1992 Batman Returns. And newcomer Brendan Fraser will play Firefly, the movie's villain.

There's one more surprise MCU link to this DC project, as Natalie Holt, who composed the score for Loki, will also compose the music for Batgirl.

Ms Marvel streams on Disney+, with new episodes premiering on Wednesdays.
