MPD takes action against four officers involved in fight during arrest

A Milwaukee police officer has been put on administrative suspension based on actions seen on video during an arrest of a man Tuesday night. Three other officers have been put on administrative duty.

"I support the members of the Milwaukee Police Department. The officers take tremendous risks on a regular basis. However, it is important officers abide by our training and policy," Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said.

Police said they responded to an entry and domestic violence call about the man at a home near 51st Street and Capitol Drive.

When they approached him walking up the block police said he "responded incoherently" and attacked an officer.

Video obtained by WISN 12 News shows several officers punching and kicking the man during the struggle to arrest him. At one point, the distinct sound of a stun gun can be heard. Also heard are witnesses expressing disapproval on the treatment of the suspect, a man who they say lives with mental illness.

Family identified the man as 25-year-old Demetrius "Meechie" Lowe, who police said was undergoing an "unusual mental health episode." The family said he is in intensive care, and they haven't been able to see him.

"He always has outbursts when he’s walking through here," said one man who asked to remain unidentified. "I think anybody can see that he’s kind of off."

Four Milwaukee police officers hurt while taking a man into custody during what they said was an "unusual mental health episode" on Wednesday evening are among several seen in video punching, kicking and using a stun gun on him during the arrest.

The four male officers had injuries described as swelling and bruising. They include a 10-year veteran, an eight-year veteran and two each with four years on the force.

Police asked anyone with video of the incident to call 414-935-7360.

The incident is being investigated by MPD's Internal Affairs and the district attorney will review it in its entirety.
