Stolen Memphis Police car crashes on Mud Island; suspect gets away

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are searching for a suspect who stole an officer’s car and crashed it near Mud Island.

According to MPD, at around 3:48 a.m., officers responded to the 1000 block of Faxon Avenue regarding a prowler call.

A woman says she woke up to Memphis Police officers knocking on her door, informing her that someone was prowling around her neighbor’s house.

Despite being empty, she says the home is covered with cameras.

“They’re fixing on it because they’re trying to sell it,” she said.

The neighbor says she also noticed her son’s bike, which was sitting on her front porch, was gone.

“I just know they broke into this house, and I guess they tried to get away on my son’s bike. His bike didn’t make it far,” she said. “The bike was down the street on the ground with whatever he took out of this house.”

While on the call, an officer’s 2020 Dodge Charger was stolen.

A little after 5 a.m., officers found the stolen car wrecked out in the area of Second Street and North Mud Island.

When WREG arrived at the scene, police urged our photographers to stay inside their vehicles because the suspect might have been armed.

However, MPD says no gun was stolen from the vehicle.

We observed a heavily damaged MPD cruiser crashed into a wooded area.

Memphis Police say this remains an ongoing investigation.
