MPD: Man tracks car burglar who tried to stab him

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Highland Heights man said he helped police catch a car burglar who tried to stab him in the driveway of his North Highland home Tuesday night.

The victim said just before 10 p.m., his three dogs began barking. He said he went outside to see what was happening and discovered someone had broken into his truck.

He said the driver’s side doors and back camper windows of his 2002 Dodge Ram were open, and a man lunged at him a couple of times with a pocketknife.

“Before I could even ask what was going on, he’s already pulling a knife out,” said the victim, who did not want to be identified. “I stayed back, and that’s when I pulled the baton out.”

The victim said he hit the suspect on the leg with the baton, and he took off running. The man said that’s when he jumped into his truck and began following the suspect.

“I was trying not to get stabbed,” he said. “I just kept an eye on him, and he goes over to Given (Avenue), and I’m finally able to stop, and he stops, and I call the cops, and that’s when police showed up.”

Police said they found the suspect, later identified as James Young, 58, in the backyard of a house in the 3400 block of Given Avenue and a pocketknife nearby.

“They found it in a flower bed. He was trying to stash it,” the victim said.

The victim said that while he was chasing Young, he saw a $400 vehicle code reader that belonged to him fall out of Young’s pocket.

He said Young also shattered a window to get inside of his truck. The victim said he was glad he was able to stop him.

“That’s my main thing–just getting the person doing that off the streets,” he said.

Young was charged with aggravated assault and the burglary of a vehicle. He is being held on a $15,000 bond.

Young is scheduled to go before a judge on Thursday.
