MP questioned authority of police after being pulled over and asked for sample
EDMONTON - A court has heard that an Edmonton MP questioned the authority of officers to demand a breath sample after he was stopped following a 2011 Christmas party.
Sgt. Conrad Moschansky (MOW'-shan-ski) says Peter Goldring admitted he had been drinking at the party, indicating that's what normal people do at those types of events.
The officer says Goldring demanded to know how many drinks it would take to fail a roadside breath test.
Moschansky says Goldring questioned the officer's right to demand a sample and the authority to stop him in the first place.
Goldring, who has been an MP for Edmonton East since 1997, is charged with refusing to provide a breathalyzer sample during a checkstop just after midnight on Dec. 4, 2011.
The defence has indicated it plans to challenge the charges on Constitutional grounds.
