Movies Not to Miss: November 2019

We were expecting the release schedule to get a little cold with Fall starting to roll in, but in come these hot-blooded action rides (and wars) to warm up seats at the cinema. While we won't be seeing much of the award contenders yet, here are some of the movies you don't want to miss for November!

Taking his cue from the Michael Bay playbook, Roland Emmerich looks ready to make his "Pearl Harbor". Based on the historical battle in the Pacific, although we expect the historical accuracy to be wiped off the face of the Earth, it's exciting to expect Emmerich's sense of scale and spectacle visualise the epic aerial and sea battle that turned the tide of World War II. With an ensemble cast that has Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Dennis Quaid and Woody Harrelson, it wouldn't be too difficult to see grumpy and grunting men chew scenery (and cigars).

Traumatised by the time when he was in the Overlook Hotel, Dan Torrance is starting to find some semblance of peace decades later. However, when another child with the same powers starts to react towards him, Dan's memories are brought back as a movement is sent after them in their quest for immortality. An adaptation to not only a Stephen King's novel but also a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", it is a tall task to make a follow-up to one of the most treasured works of cinema. Still we think the name that Warner Bros. got to helm this adaptation is no sleeper. Given almost complete creative control to write, direct and edit, this could finally be the horror piece that elevates Mike Flanagan to one of the true masters of horror of this generation. Starring a recognisable cast with Ewan McGregor and Rebecca Ferguson in the lead, we could be seeing the making of another cinematic classic (if less insane), or at least an entertaining outing without the immense expectations.

Depicting the intense rivalry between Ford and Ferrari after an unsuccessful buyout by the former of the latter, Henry Ford II decides to upend the rival car company by building a car that could defeat Ferrari's reigning model at the 24 Hours of Le Man endurance race in 1966. "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' may be the star-studded buddy movie of the year, but it certainly isn't the only one in the race. Starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale in top form as the engineer and driver respectively behind the wheels of the Ford GT40, we are just as excited to see James Mangold return to some conventional stories since "Logan".

Thought to be a reboot of the "Charlie's Angels" franchise from 2000, this is actually going to be a new instalment set in the same universe following "Full Throttle". As the Townsend Agency expands internationally with different teams of Angels operating around the world, Sabina, Elena and Jane are a new team of Angels sent to protect the world from a new piece of dangerous technology. If there was one franchise that would benefit greatly from the #MeToo movement in Hollywood, "Charlie's Angels" would be a no-brainer. Rather than selling the "girls can kick ass too" attitude of its predecessors, this new "Charlie's Angels" are looking to capitalise on more edgy feminist tones under Elizabeth Banks' direction, especially with a cast uniting Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as a team. Plus, we don't think anyone is going to complain having Djimon Hounsou, Sam Claflin and Patrick Stewart added in the mix.

Since the meteoric success of "Frozen" in 2013, Disney didn't have any immediate plans for a sequel until the creative team behind it had a solid idea for it. With directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, song-writers Kristen Anderson and Robert Lopez, composer Christophe Beck, and the leading cast back together, Walt Disney looks ready to unleash another spell binding adventure (if not make another hit that will loop in our brains). As Elsa and Anna embark on a new journey to find the sources of Elsa's powers to save their kingdom, Walt Disney Animation is once again raising the stakes of who will win the next animation Oscar.

Malaysian martial arts movies are making an impression this year. After delivering an emotional and guttural punch with "Sangkar", director Kabir Bhatia's MMA family drama is once again butting heads with Adrian Teh's take on a similar premise for box office supremacy. Employing Hairul Azreen as a retired soldier who returns home to fend his family from a gang boss (played by none other than director Dain Said himself), "Wira" seems to be poised to deliver more nail-biting MMA action where "Sangkar" didn't, and with some real MMA fighters and peak stunt workers on set, "Wira" seems ready to be another notch in Adrian Teh's action filmmaking career.

The ensemble murder mystery seems to be having a little resurgence since "Murder on the Orient Express" (and the upcoming 'sequel' "Death on the Nile"), but if there was one director we didn't expect to hop on this trend train is Rian Johnson. Rather than adapting one of the many classical murder mysteries out there, Rian is sharpening his own writing (hence why we loved "Looper" so much) in this self-directed outing. Already a must-watch with a cast that has Daniel Craig, post-Captain America Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer, premiering to an outstandingly positive reception at the Toronto International Film Festival only makes it all the more reason we want to pour some goodwill in Rian before he goes back to making "Star Wars".

Malaysian animation is taking another big stride in 2019, with two of its largest animation studios making box office records. Now the last of the big three of Malaysian animation studios makes their debut feature to close the year. With a new gadget introduced to the agents of MATA, Ali questions his place in the spy agency until he meets a rogue figure who claims that the one who introduced the gadgets have a sinister motive. Although "Ejen Ali" won't be representing Malaysia in the Oscars any time soon, it is always good to see another Malaysian studio entering the fray to give some competition to the animation scene in Malaysia, and together help the industry progress even further than it already has.

Christmas comes early this November to set the mood for that romantic Christmas date movie. After a few hits and misses doing genre pieces with daring ideas (see "Ghostbusters" and "A Simple Favor"), Paul Feig is now doing what could be his mildest and safest work to date, a traditional rom-com. Co-written by Emma Thompson about a girl who is continuously unlucky and lands a job as an elf assistant for the Christmas holidays, she bumps into Tom who takes her life for an unexpected turn. We have already seen Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding leading their respective rom-coms, so their shipping couldn't have been sweeter, with parental figures played by Michelle Yeoh and Emma Thompson dispensing wisdom and wits in this winter romance.
