Moviegoer files class action lawsuit over $8 Coke and Goobers
We have all snuck M&M’s in our pockets or bottles of water in our purses to avoid the high cost of movie theater concessions.
But one Michigan man is so fed up with the high prices that he is taking his cause to court.
Joshua Thompson of Livonia, Wisc. filed a class action lawsuit in the Wayne Circuit County Court against a local AMC movie theater over the high prices of tickets, candy and soda.
“He got tired of being taken advantage of,” Thompson’s lawyer, Kerry Morgan, told the Detroit Free Press. “It’s hard to justify prices that are three- and four-times higher than anywhere else.”
The suit says that the price gouging of movie theater snack bars is unlawful. Johnson said he used to take his own snacks into the theater, until management posted a sign banning the practice. The final straw came on Dec. 26 when Johnson paid $8 for a Coke and a box of Goobers — three times the amount it would cost at a gas station.
The lawsuit officially claims that the theater violates the Michigan Consumer Protection Act by raising snack prices, and seeks refunds for all moviegoers who were similarly charged — as well as a penalty for the theater.
Legal analysts told the Free Press that the suit will most likely be dismissed, but nobody can blame Johnson for trying. But if he is upset over Wisconsin movie prices, we recommend that he never plan on seeing a movie here in Washington, D.C.
