BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Baton Rouge leaders are continuing their efforts at improving traffic flow and congestion on many streets and highways in the city.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and other city officials held a ribbon-cutting in north Baton Rouge, marking the completion of another MOVEBR project.

“I’m just glad. There was construction on Choctaw for one and a half years,” said Abouzar “Bruce” Qalandari, Manager of City Town Meat Market.

The $13.5 million initiative expanded the roadway from two to four lanes in the North Sherwood Forest Drive and Choctaw Drive areas.

“And we haven’t been getting that traffic for the last two years, but it doesn’t matter. Safety first,” said Qalandari.

For a lot of retailers, business slowed down during the construction process.

“That traffic brings businesses. Those businesses bring more investment. That investment increases the values of homes in this area,” said Daryl Hurst, Councilman for District 5.

Qalandari said before the expansion he was scared to drive in this area.

“The road was so narrow, especially at nighttime, and with the condition of the road that was so bad, there were a lot of accidents,” said Qalandari.

Hurst said North Baton Rouge has one the oldest infrastructures. Adding more lanes makes daily travel more efficient.

“This allows it to allow traffic to go around, continue that flow to assure that the city is not at a standstill in this area of town,” said Hurst.
