Move money out of entities that ignore climate change, Framingham writer says

To the Editor:

Your article on the “Happy Returns” climate spoof ad took me back to when I read Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” in a college English class. Our professor slowly let us discover Swift’s satirical message that the “problem” of poverty could be solved by eating babies.

Of course, it’s not 1729, and the spoofers were not arguing that we eat children.

Instead, it’s 2024, and we are creating a future that will kill many children in extreme heat events around the globe. Shouldn’t this be just as shocking?

If we actually accepted the grim climate reality, we would pay attention to where our money is invested, whether it’s in a retirement account at Vanguard, or just a checking account. Many big banks like Chase, Citigroup and Bank of America are heavily invested in fossil fuel infrastructure. Why not move your money to a local credit union, and let your big bank know why?

Or you could stay in your own personal bubble of denial. Just don’t be surprised when the view from your bubble starts to get as grim as Swift’s famous satire.
