Mountie severely injured in early-morning collision in Surrey, B.C.

SURREY, B.C. - A Metro Vancouver RCMP officer has been severely injured in an early morning collision.

The RCMP detachment in Surrey, B.C., confirms the officer was in an unmarked cruiser when the vehicle was hit by a semi-trailer.

The incident happened at about 5 a.m. (Pacific time) at a busy intersection in Surrey's Newton neighbourhood, southeast of Vancouver.

A cause of the crash is under investigation and police say they can't yet comment on the officer's condition.

A busy section of 64th Avenue between 144th Street and 152nd Street remains closed until further notice.
