Two Stark County universities are partnering with Notre Dame College to accept the school's students when it closes.

Notre Dame has reached "teach-out" or transfer agreements with Walsh University in North Canton and the University of Mount Union in Alliance. The South Euclid institution announced last month that it will cease operations after the spring semester.

Mount Union and Walsh are guaranteeing admission and 100% transfer of all credits earned by Notre Dame students. They also will offer a financial aid package that is equal to the net price they pay at Notre Dame.

There are conditions.

According to Notre Dame, students in good standing with at least 60 completed credits will be guaranteed admissions, comparable net tuition and transfer of all credits. Students in good standing with less than 60 credits may have the chance to transfer to a partner institution and receive the same benefits.

“Our primary focus has been to ensure our students can successfully continue their education, graduate and — in the tradition of the Sisters of Notre Dame — live a life of personal, professional and global responsibility," Terri Bradford Eason, Notre Dame College Board of Trustees chairman, said on Feb. 29.

Officials at Mount Union and Walsh said in separate news releases that they were committed to make the transition as smooth as possible on Notre Dame students.

Mount Union President Gregory L. King said the closing of Notre Dame was a "stark reminder of the challenges" higher education faces, and Mount Union empathizes with the students, faculty, staff and alumni of there.

Rebecca Congelio, vice president of enrollment management at Walsh, said counselors would be available to guide Notre Dame students through the process, including exploring athletic programs. Walsh officials also would help them with living arrangements.

"We understand that this an anxious time for you and want to reassure you that Walsh University is prepared to accept you into our campus community with as little impact on your budget and timeline as possible," she said in the release.

Walsh also is offering tuition remission covering all of the tuition for dependents of full-time Notre Dame employees who have a student currently at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame has reached similar agreements with other schools, including Baldwin Wallace University, Kent State University and Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania. Officials have said partnerships with additional universities and colleges could be reached.

Malone University in Canton also posted on Facebook that it will accept Notre Dame students and provide additional scholarship funding.
