Motorola may host an event about nothing at MWC 2014
Motorola has sent out media invitations to a special MWC 2014 event that will take place on February 25th, CNET reports, but there’s speculation the company will have no new product to unveil during the show. Instead, Motorola may talk about being acquired by Lenovo and what that means for the company.
Top Motorola executives including CEO Dennis Woodside will attend the show to provide an “update on the business,” the invitation says, without revealing anything else. The company says more details will be unveiled closer to the event.
Considering there have been no product leaks or chatter related to upcoming Motorola devices, it makes sense not to expect a new Motorola product launch soon. Comparatively, Motorola’s 2013 line of smartphones were present in leaks well ahead their announcement, with the Moto X rumor campaign going on for quite a few months before the company finally unveiled its flagship smartphone.
Recently, the company was rumored to be interested in making even cheaper devices, and in an interview Woodside suggested Motorola has new devices in the pipeline, which were the scope of his CES 2014 meetings with potential partners. However, it’s not clear at this time whether the company is ready to make any new products official at MWC, a show who’s star is likely to be Samsung’s Galaxy S5.
Motorola has also been rumored to work on its own wearable devices, although, again, there aren’t any fresh indications that such a product will be unveiled this year.
