Motorcyclist killed, pedestrian injured in separate Covington crashes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Covington Police Department is investigating two separate crashes that left a motorcyclist dead and a pedestrian injured this month.

Covington Police responded to an accident on Tennessee Avenue near Highway 51 on April 3. According to police, a motorcyclist collided with a white Hyundai that was leaving a gas station on Highway 51.

Police say Tipton County EMS took the motorcyclist to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis but he later died of his injuries.

Covington Police say officers were able to review surveillance footage from the area. The footage reportedly showed that the driver of the Hyundai pulled out into traffic without noticing oncoming drivers.

The driver was initially cited for failure to yield at the scene, police say. Covington Police say investigators determined that no drugs or alcohol were involved but are still working to determine if additional charges should be filed.

Covington Police are also investigating a separate hit-and-run crash that happened on the morning of April 15 at the intersection of Highway 51 and Holly Grove Road.

Police say a dark-colored sedan traveling southbound on Highway 51 struck a man who was walking. Covington Police say the victim was taken to Baptist Memorial Tipton with injuries to his head and legs.

The sedan reportedly continued driving southbound and fled the scene. Investigators have not found the vehicle at this time. Police say the suspect’s vehicle will have damage on its front and hood.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call the Covington Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 901-475-1261.
