(KRON) — The victim in Saturday’s motorcycle crash on Highway 1 in Half Moon Bay has been identified, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release. The motorcyclist killed was identified as Joaquin Dominik Jimenez Alvarado, the son of Half Moon Bay Mayor Joaquin Jimenez.

Alvarado was 28 years old and lived in Half Moon Bay. He worked as a union stationary engineer in San Francisco, according to Half Moon Bay city officials. He was an “integral part of the Half Moon Bay community,” officials wrote in a news release.

The crash, which caused the highway to be closed in both directions for hours, happened around 5:45 p.m. in the area of Highway 1 and Mirada Road. The collision involved a pickup truck and a motorcycle.

First responders arrived at the scene to give the motorcyclist medical attention. He died at the scene, authorities said. The pickup truck driver was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation.

Highway 1 later reopened that night around 11:30 p.m.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with Mayor Jimenez and his entire family during this me of unimaginable loss,” San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus said. “No one is ever prepared for such unexpected tragedies, and when they strike so close to home, they affect us all profoundly. As a community, let us come together to support the Jimenez family and like them up with our love and strength.”
