Mother of Youngsville charter student says daughter was bullied and sexually harassed

YOUNGSVILLE, La. (KLFY)– In Youngsville, a charter academy is being accused of sweeping sexual harassment and bullying under the rug.

Brenna Primeaux said for the past year her 10-year-old daughter and other students have experienced bullying and sexual harassment at the Acadiana Renaissance Charter Academy. She said reports have been filed, but little to no action has been taken.

“It seems like there were a lot of promises that weren’t followed through with,” Primeaux said.

Primeaux said she was heartbroken and appalled when her 10-year-old-daughter confided in her about being sexually harassed and bullied by male classmates for a year. Primeaux said she filled out a bullying report form detailing the obscene language she said her daughter endured.

“Their response was to set up a meeting with the dean and my husband I did attend the meeting,” Primeaux said.

Primeaux said the school’s main action was to separate her daughter and the boys who were harassing her, but she said this was not enough.

“That’s not an effective solution because they can just go and do that to other kids, and they have,” Primeaux said.

She said there are other parents who claim to experience the same things with their children in the school’s Facebook group.

“From what I’ve heard, the administration was aware of specific children doing the bullying and they’ve had multiple reports, and it was just, I guess, swept under the rug. There was nothing done about it,” Primeaux said.

News 10 reached out to ARCA for a statement, and was told:

“The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. We have a strict protocol against bullying and harassment and take any allegation of such behavior extremely seriously. Once we receive the report, we follow all procedures and take all appropriate disciplinary actions according to the findings in the investigation.”

The school also shares their bullying policy where they indicate students, parents, and school leaders can work together to prevent and end bullying. Primeaux said she just wants to see action taken and changes made.
