Mother to spend 6 months in prison after the death of her 2YO son in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Pinya Rae Starr was sentenced on Wednesday in Portsmouth to six months in prison following the death of her 2-year-old son Kiyan Spears, the Portsmouth Commonwealth Attorney’s Office states.

On Feb. 28, a Portsmouth jury found Starr guilty of child abuse and neglect following the death of her son.

The court affirmed the jury’s verdict and sentenced Starr to 5 years, with 4 years and 6 months suspended, followed by 5 years of supervised probation upon release.

According to evidence presented by the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, Kiyan Spears suffered multiple blunt force injuries to his head, a brain bleed and other internal and external injuries, all of which contributed to his death. This sentencing hearing was handled by Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Haille Hogfeldt.
