According to the release, the mother of the child physically held the fox down, “which prevented further injury to the child or bystanders.”

According to the release, the fox showed “obvious signs of illness and aggression.” It was euthanized at the scene and taken in for testing, where it tested positive for rabies.

According to the release, rabies is a “non-curable illness with a 100% fatality rate that can be transmitted to humans.”

According to Chief of Police Brendan LaFlamme, the department has gotten calls about the incident.

“Some people are critical of the actions of the Hollis officers who euthanized this animal. As chief of police, I stand behind the officer’s actions. They acted quickly and professionally to make the scene safe so that the injured 4-year-old could get the treatment that she needed,” LaFlamme said. “Their actions prevented any further injury to people and animals, slowed the spread of this disease and ended the animals suffering.”

According to the release, the mother and child both received medical treatment and are expected to be OK.
