‘Most Idaho accident I’ve ever heard of.’ Spuds cover highway after crash, cops say

It was a tough day for taters.

First Taco Bell announced it is revamping its menu and getting rid of a popular potato snack, setting off a flurry of frustrated comments on Twitter.

Then Friday afternoon, a truckload of potatoes was mashed after a train smashed into a semi in Idaho, and Twitter users responded again.

The train and semi collided on U.S. 30 west of Twin Falls, Idaho State Police said. The intersection was blocked for some time because of the crash — and because potatoes covered the road, police said.

“Lots of potatoes on the ground on US30 at Curry Crossing in Twin Falls,” Idaho State Police said on Twitter. “There is a train versus semi crash there currently being investigated by District 4 troopers. Expect delays if you are in the area.”

Jose Alvarez Salas, 24, of Downey, California, was traveling westbound in a semi-truck and trailer and did not stop for the flashing lights for an oncoming train, Idaho State Police said.

“The semi entered the railroad tracks and was struck by the train, where the trailer separated from the semi and struck a 1998 Ford Windstar Van, which was occupied by Ralph Neimeyer, 68, of Twin Falls,” police said in a news release. “Approximately 40,000 pounds of potatoes were spilled onto the roadway.”

Police didn’t say if anyone was hurt.

“Most Idaho accident I’ve ever heard of,” one Twitter user said.

This isn’t the first time potatoes have littered Idaho’s roadways. In October a potato truck overturned on U.S. 30 near Pocatello. A lane of traffic was blocked by the spuds, the Idaho Statesman reported.

“This is literally what people think Idaho is like 24/7,” one Twitter user said of Friday’s potato accident.

Some people got a kick out of Idaho’s famous produce baking in the roads.

“Alert!!!! Potatoes Found in IDAHO!!!” another user said.
