Hokkaido, the second largest island of Japan, was hit by a 6.7 earthquake on Thursday.

At least 5.3 million residents were without power after the Hokkaido Electric Power Company shut down power plants, according to The Telegraph. BBC reports that the earthquake also triggered a series of landslides that took down even more power lines, and enveloped houses and cars. At least eight people were killed, and about 40 went missing, according to The Independent.

The destructive natural disaster comes just days after the Jebi typhoon hit Japan. Jebi was the strongest typhoon to hit the country in 25 years, and the storm halted transportation, damaged infrastructure, and killed at least 10 people.
