This is the most awful thing Sony has ever created

Sony’s big CES 2015 press conference is about to begin – watch live right here!

Sony was founded more than 60 years ago and it has been a consumer electronics leader for decades. During that time it has created some of the most fantastic and important consumer devices the world has ever seen, and it has also built some devices that are better off forgotten, never to be spoken of again. In all that time, however, I’m not sure Sony has ever built and launched anything as awful as this.

As noted by the Sony fans over at Xperia Blog, Sony is getting ready to launch a new accessory with the model number SPA-TA1. It will be available in Japan and elsewhere in the coming months and will cost just under $40. What does the SPA-TA1 do that makes it the most awful thing Sony has ever created, you might ask?

It encourages people to take pictures with their tablets.

Compatible with both of Sony’s CyberShot “lens cameras,” which BGR previewed back in September, the device clips onto any tablet that is up to 7.5 inches wide and allows either the QX-10 or QX-100 to be snapped on. Obviously the thought process here is that taking photos in public with a tablet isn’t horrifying enough, so we might as well strap a giant lens onto the back while we’re at it.

Actually, to be fair, there is one thing on this planet worse than taking a picture in public with a Sony lens camera strapped onto your tablet:

Sony’s SPA-TA1 will launch in Japan on April 4th. Please do us all a favor and steer clear.
