Mosquito Ridge Road reopens after major repairs due to Mosquito Fire

(FOX40.COM) — Just under two years following the devastating Mosquito Fire in 2022, the Tahoe National Forest is planning to reopen Mosquito Ridge Road on Thursday after a major re-engineering of the roadway.

The Mosquito Fire burned more than 70,000 acres in both Placer and El Dorado counties from Sep. 6, 2022, to Oct. 22, 2022, coming close to enveloping the Placer County community of Foresthill.

According to the Forest Service, the roadway needed major re-engineering, repairs to drainage, retaining walls, road surfaces and grading.

While the roadway will be reopened the Forest Service urges the public to remember the potential dangers of driving through a burn scar area.

As there is still a significant lack of vegetation in the area there is an increased chance of rock/landslides and other types of falling debris.

“We really appreciate everyone’s patience while this major road construction project was underway,” said Tahoe National Forest American River District Ranger Michelle Barry. “Mosquito Ridge Road provides valued access for many different users and we are thrilled to announce its reopening.”

The roadway winds tightly along the hillsides above the Middle Fork of the American River canyon before climbing into the Tahoe National Forest.

Drivers are advised to follow the posted 25 mph speed limit and remain alert to altering road conditions.

Even though the road has reopened road repairs will continue over the next six months which can delay drivers periodically.

Mosquito Ridge Road is an access point connecting the Auburn area to several unique recreation opportunities like the Middle Fork of the American River, Placer Big Trees Grove, French Meadows Reservoir and Granite Chief Wilderness.
