Mortgage paid off for family of VB detective who died from cancer linked to military service

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Tunnels to Towers Foundation recently paid off the home mortgage for the family of a Virginia Beach detective and military veteran who died of cancer.

Virginia Beach Police Department Detective Kurtis Vogel died on March 5, 2023, after being diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer in 2021. The cancer was attributed to his military service.

Vogel, who grew up in New York, was inspired to join the military after the September 11th attacks and enlisted in the Army in 2003. He’d go on to earn two Silver Crosses for his service.

“He strived to make his country and community a better place and did it with great pride,” said Vogel’s widow Brianne.” It has been so moving to see his dedication to his country and community honored and passed down to our family.”

Tunnels to Towers, a charitable organization that provides mortgage-free homes to Gold Star families and families of fallen first responders, made the announcement on Gold Star Spouses Day.

“I was completely shocked to learn that Tunnel to Towers would pay off our family’s mortgage,” Brianne said. “Lifting this financial burden has taken a HUGE weight off of my shoulders. I am so beyond grateful and feel truly blessed … I feel like I can be more present and available to my children as we navigate life without my husband.”
