“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough laced into Donald Trump on Wednesday over that nearly hour-long open meeting the president held Tuesday with lawmakers about immigration reform.

The former congressman said Trump’s clear intention was to disprove aspersions cast on his mental faculties in Michael Wolff’s new book, but that in effect he only reinforced them. Scarborough said Trump looked like a doddering and confused grandfather being led around by his relatives.

“Grandpa kept kind of wandering back and forth and he had to be reminded time and time again by Republicans what he believed,” said Scarborough on the set of “Morning Joe.” “He has no idea about the issues and has no positions on the issues that actually drive his base the most.”

Scarborough was referring to a widely dissected moment during the meeting in which Trump told Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) that he would be open to a “clean” DACA bill — legislation aimed solely to protect people who entered the country as minors with parents who lacked proper documentation.

That is, until he was swiftly reminded by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) that, that was in fact not the plan and that a DACA fix needed to be tied to other GOP immigration priorities, which he broadly labeled as “security.”

“Kevin McCarthy would sort of figuratively grab him by the shoulder and go, ‘Grandpa, come on over here. Come on, papa. Sit down here don’t hurt yourself. This is what you really believe,'” said Scarborough “And then papa would say, ‘OK, this is what I really believe.'”

In the past, both Scarborough and his “Morning Joe” co-host, Mika Brzezinski, have questioned Trump’s mental state and suggested he may be suffering from dementia.

Trump’s overall performance during the Tuesday meeting actually came in for bipartisan scorn. Conservatives online and on Fox News denounced Trump’s assertion that he would sign any immigration deal Congress handed him.

“What was the point of running for president?'” asked a visibly annoyed Tucker Carlson on his show Tuesday.
