Mormon church president remains hospitalized

(Reuters) - Thomas Monson, the 89-year-old president of the Mormon church, remained hospitalized on Wednesday, two days after being admitted, the church said.

Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said no further updates were immediately available on Monson's condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

In a statement Tuesday, the church said Monson had been admitted to hospital on Monday evening after not feeling well and was being given fluids. It did not say where the hospital was. A spokeswoman later said Monson had been suffering from dehydration.

There was no mention of Monson's health on the official website of the faith, formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which prominently featured his latest message.

During a church general conference in Salt Lake City on Sunday, Monson announced plans for the construction of new temples in Brazil, the Philippines, Kenya, and the states of Idaho and Utah.Monson became president of the church in 2008 after serving as a first counselor to his predecessor, former President Gordon Hinckley.
