Morgan Freeman Brings Entire Family Along to Celebrate His SAG Awards Honor: ‘This Is My Brood’

Morgan Freeman didn’t just bring along one date as he prepared to accept the lifetime achievement award at the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday — he brought along his whole family.

“This is my brood,” the legendary actor explained at The PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly & TNT Official SAG Awards Red Carpet Live Show.

“They all flew in all the way from the southeast coast, and they’re just all coming to stand up with [me] while I do this,” he continued.

“Growing up as a kid you want to be in this business doing this and then all of a sudden you look around and here you are,” he added.

Freeman also went on to reveal which one of his many movies sticks out to him now as being one of the most special moments of his career.

Street Smart with Christopher Reeve,” he said, referring to the 1987 thriller. “That one I would say launched my movie career.”

Moreno previously revealed to PEOPLE that despite the gravity of the honor she’ll be bestowing on Freeman, she’s making sure things won’t be entirely serious.

“I’m telling the audience something about him that they don’t know, that’s funny,” Moreno, 86, explained at The PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly & TNT Official SAG Awards Red Carpet Live Show. “I wanna impart something quite amusing on the times we worked together in the Electric Company.”

“I’m a good and dear friend, and I’m a loving friend and I want them to get a picture of a different kind of Morgan,” she added.

Freeman also presented Moreno (a member of the exclusive EGOT club) with the same special award in 2014.

“When he gave me mine, I really remember thinking, ‘Oh if he ever gets honored, I hope it’s me that gets to present it,” she said.

SAG announced over the summer that the Oscar-winning actor and producer will be the 54th recipient of its Life Achievement Award, bestowed for his achievements in film in addition to his humanitarian accomplishments.

The prestigious award has been given to esteemed members of the industry elite in the recent past, including Ernest Borgnine, Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Van Dyke, Rita Moreno, Debbie Reynolds, and Carol Burnett. Lily Tomlin received the honor at last year’s ceremony.

The 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Sunday, Jan. 21 at 8 pm ET. PEOPLE, Entertainment Weekly and TNT’s live red carpet show starting at 5:30 p.m. on PeopleTV — found on your favorite streaming devices.
