Morgan County OKs extra 75 square feet in accessory dwelling

The Morgan County Board of Zoning Appeals met Monday night at the county administration building to consider a request to increase the maximum living area of an accessory dwelling.

The county's Unified Development Ordinance sets a limit on "accessory dwellings" at 800 square feet or 50% of the primary residence, whichever is less. "Accessory dwellings" are not to be used as living areas without approval from the county.

Darrell and Marilyn DeBruhl requested a variance to allow the construction of an accessory dwelling that would contain 875 square feet and be used for members of the property owner's family to live in. Both want to live close to their family due to health issues. The new building will be constructed with wider doors to allow the use of wheelchairs or walkers if needed.

The property is located on North Baltimore Road in Gregg Township.

There was no opposition to their request and the board voted to grant it.

The next scheduled board meeting is Monday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the county administration building on South Main Street.
