Morgan County commissioner Stisher to face Matthew Frost in runoff

MORGAN COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Don Stisher, a 6-term commissioner in Morgan County, will now have to face a runoff for the first time.

Stisher will go up against first time candidate Matthew Frost after both candidates failed to obtain enough votes on Tuesday to avoid a runoff.

Frost, who hopes to unseat Stisher, says his hard work to get recognized through the election campaign has paid off.

“They got me over the top and we are still good to go,” Frost said.

With only provisional ballots remaining, Frost managed to obtain roughly 33% of the vote while incumbent Stisher only claimed 39% of the vote. Now the two are heading for a runoff in April.

District 3 covers most of the southern part of the county, including Falkville and Eva, and neither candidate is a stranger to the area.

Frost has worked as a mechanical operator under Stisher for over a decade, while Stisher has been at the helm in the district for 24 years. In knowing Frost for some time, Stisher told News 19 that he expected a close call from his challenger.

“We knew it was going to be a tight race, and so we did our part and prevailed, but now we have to refocus and deal with our one opponent,” Stisher said. “We will evaluate that and go forward and give it our best shot.”

Both candidates have a plan to continue leveraging their knowledge and experience in dealing with infrastructure issues in District Three.

“We’ve got to prove ourselves stronger and get the word back out that we are still committed to the job and be ready to roll,” Stisher said.

“There’s a lot of roads that need to be looked at that I’d like to see get done around here. And I would like to be the one to do it,” Frost explained.

Voters agree that the roads in the county are becoming a bigger issue, and say they need their commissioner to be dedicated to the repairs.

“I grew up on these roads and I want whoever gets elected to fix them and make them better,” resident Angie Ruth said.

The runoff for Commission District Three in Morgan County is set for April 16.
