More tribal settlements announced in Dakotas
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — American Indian tribes in North Dakota have received more than $65 million to settle claims that the federal government mismanaged tribal money and trust lands.
The Justice Department says the Three Affiliated Tribes got $10 million and the Spirit Lake Sioux about $6.7 million. The Standing Rock Sioux in North Dakota and South Dakota got nearly $49 million.
The federal government announced earlier this year it was paying more than $1 billion to dozens of tribes across the country. Announced settlements with tribes in the Dakotas total more than $118 million.
The settlements are separate from a $3.4 billion settlement with individual members of tribes across the country.
