More summer heat Friday, but storms return and last through weekend

Tonight features partly cloudy skies and it’s a mild night on the way, with low temperatures only dropping into the upper 50s with a south breeze continuing to usher in warm and more humid air.

Friday sees an increase in our chances for thunderstorms as a cold front approaches from the west. With a few peaks of sunshine out ahead of our front, there is enough ‘juice’ for a few embedded thunderstorms among showers pushing through. However, aside from the threat for brief locally heavy rainfall, severe weather is not expected. High temperatures will still reach summer-like levels despite afternoon showers and storms with low 80s expected.

Saturday continues our threat for scattered showers and thunderstorms as our cold front slows down and takes its sweet time crossing through the area and an area of low pressure moves along that front. The abundant clouds and showers that are expected as a result won’t result in much in the way of thunderstorm activity, but rain, which could be steady at times, is expected. We’ll see high temperatures in the low 70s in what will be a soggy and humid day. The Weather Prediction Center has placed our region in a level one out of four risk for flooding on Saturday – this issue will be isolated to the areas that see the heaviest rain, as downpours moving through will be moving rather slowly due to low winds aloft to steer them.

Sunday continues our chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms, though the coverage of those storms will not be as widespread as on Saturday with our front scooting off to our east. However, downpours will once again be slow-moving, so the threat for very localized heavy rainfall will continue. With a few peaks of sun expected in between showers and storms, high temperatures will rebound into the middle to upper 70s.

Monday continues the risk for at least a few showers with a secondary cold front approaching and then stalling. As a result, with clouds and occasional showers around, we will see high temperatures in the mid 70s.

Severe Weather Awareness Week: Flash flood Safety

Tuesday will provide more chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms, with Monday’s front lifting back up to the north as a warm front. Coverage of thunderstorms Tuesday should be less than on Monday, but will still be scattered with high temperatures near 80 degrees.

Wednesday will keep the risk for a few isolated showers and storms with a warm and humid air mass in place as our next cold front approaches. We’ll see high temperatures near 80 degrees.

Thursday continues our unsettled pattern with the risk for more scattered showers and thunderstorms with yet another area of low pressure nearby across the Great Lakes. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s.

Tick season is here: Here’s how to protect yourself and your pets

Looking ahead, it’s an unsettled weather pattern that continues Friday with a cold front pushing through, but we will see improving conditions Saturday through the day with plenty of sunshine returning by Sunday as high pressure takes control of the region’s weather and breaks our unsettled weather pattern. High temperatures on Friday will be in the low 70s, with 60s expected for highs for Saturday and Sunday.

We are in spring forest fire season in West Virginia – this means don’t burn between 7 AM and 5 PM through May 31st. Low humidity values during the daytime, along with breezier and warmer conditions will at times increase the fire threat, hence the burn ban during most of the daytime. Follow all regulations or be faced with potential consequences, such as fines!
