More unemployed to be hired for temporary RI Sandy cleanup projects with $500K in fed funds
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island is getting the second $500,000 installment of emergency U.S. Department of Labor funding to hire temporary workers to help with Superstorm Sandy cleanup and recovery.
The funds are going to the state Department of Labor and Training to hire workers who are unemployed. Rhode Island has gotten $500,000 so far in National Emergency Grant funds and is due to get another $500,000.
The money is being used to support the hiring of workers for temporary projects, including the cleanup, repair and reconstruction of public infrastructure and spaces. The money can also be used for work on the homes of individuals who qualify for assistance under the federally-funded weatherization program.
Sen. Jack Reed announced the release of the additional funds on Monday.
