SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The California Highway Patrol seized more than 42 pounds of fentanyl — the equivalent of about 9.6 million lethal doses — from San Francisco’s Tenderloin in the past year, officials said. According to California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office, the CHP has issued 6,044 citations leading to 496 arrests for illegal activity and recovered 15 crime-linked guns in its SF operations since May 1 of 2023.

Newsom’s office also reiterated an announcement from San Francisco Mayor London Breed last week about an overall drop in crime in the city. In the first quarter of 2024, there has been a 32% year-over-year drop in property crime and a 14% drop in violent crime, compared to the same time period in 2023.

“This reduction reflects the work of local law enforcement and state and federal efforts,” said the governor’s office. The CHP has been one component of a combined enforcement effort involving the San Francisco Police Department, the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the California National Guard, the California Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the US Attorney’s Office.

CHP officers began deploying to the Tenderloin in May of 2023 with a focus on improving public safety, targeting fentanyl trafficking, disrupting fentanyl supply and busting drug trafficking rings. The Tenderloin operation is part of Gov. Newsom’s broader plan for tackling the fentanyl and opioid crisis, officials said.
