Moore will run for state House

Dec. 12—HIGH POINT — Just weeks after winning reelection, City Councilman Britt Moore announced Tuesday that he will run for the Republican nomination for House District 62 in Guilford County in next year's elections.

Moore, a longtime High Point councilman and local businessman who was reelected to his at-large citywide seat for a four-year term in last month's municipal elections, said he decided to run for the state House to serve High Point and make a difference in his community and state government.

"From Summerfield to Stokesdale and Oak Ridge to High Point and Greensboro, there is so much that makes our community a special place," Moore said. "But with all that we face today — from economic headwinds to challenges in our schools — the desire to serve and make our community a better place has taken a new direction."

Moore told The High Point Enterprise that he decided to run for the state House seat that will be relinquished by Rep. John Faircloth, R-Guilford, in part at the urging of supporters.

If he were to lose the House District 62 contest, he would remain on High Point City Council. If Moore were to win the race, the remaining members of the council would pick someone to fill Moore's unexpired term.

Moore said he will focus in his House campaign on building up education and empowering parents, teachers and schools, keeping taxes low and creating a fertile climate for business and supporting law enforcement and first responders to keep communities safe.

Moore becomes the fourth Republican to announce for District 62. The others are former state legislator John Blust, educator and businesswoman Michelle Bardsley and 20-year-old mechanical contractor Jaxon Barber, all of Greensboro.

Democrat Marjorie Benbow of Summerfield will run as well.

District 62 covers north High Point, western Greensboro and western and northwestern Guilford County. Faircloth, 84, who's from High Point, said earlier this fall that he will retire after serving his current term, which goes through the end of next year.

Candidate filing for the 2024 elections continues through noon Friday.
