Montrose selects mayor, mayor pro tem

MONTROSE, Colo. (KREX) — The City of Montrose’s mayor and mayor pro tem have been selected for the 2024-25 term.

Montrose City Councilmember J. David Reed was chosen to serve as mayor at Tuesday’s council meeting. Reed was first elected to the council’s District 3 seat in 2020 and was re-elected for another four-year term in Montrose’s April 2 general municipal election.

Reed, former mayor pro tem, succeeds Barbara Bynum as mayor. Bynum was elected to City Council in 2018 and has served three terms on the council and two terms as mayor.

“Barbara has an amazing knowledge of municipal government and has represented the City of Montrose well while serving on the board of the Colorado Municipal League,” said Reed. “We’re going to miss Barbara and her leadership and wish her well in whatever her next endeavor might be.”

Councilmember Dave Frank was selected to become the new mayor pro tem.

The Montrose City Charter dictates that although the public elects city councilmembers, the mayor and mayor pro tem are appointed by the council each April for a one-year term.
