Montgomery man accused of shooting two, including MPD officer

A 23-year-old Montgomery man is accused of shooting a police officer and another person over the weekend, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 12:20 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of South Panama Street and Poplar Street, said Sgt. Jeremy Burkett with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, in an email. Police arrested Devonta Fuller on three counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree robbery.

An officer responded to a call about a person shooting a firearm, authorities said. When the officer arrived at Poplar Street near Ann Street, Fuller allegedly began shooting at both the officer and the other victim, hitting them both.

More officers arrived, and Fuller began shooting at them, authorities said. Police chased Fuller on foot until he reached a business near the 1100 block of Ann Street, where Fuller barricaded himself in the business, Burkett said.

The stand-off continued with Fuller until the officer took him into custody, Burkett said. Fuller was injured and taken to the hospital. Officers then transported Fuller to the Montgomery County jail. He is in jail without a bond.

The agency is investigating the incident and is not releasing any more information at this time, Burkett said in an email.
