Montgomery County school board approves resolution to promote safe gun storage

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — As gun safety concerns remain in the spotlight across the country, one school district in the New River Valley is taking action.

The Montgomery County Public School Board voted unanimously to pass a resolution promoting the safe storage of guns. This means the school district will now notify parents of their responsibility to safely store firearms.

During a school board meeting on April 9, Superintendent Dr. Bernard Bragen Jr. stated that 4.7 million American children live in households with guns.

“As educators, our main priority is keeping our children and staff safe,” said Bragen. “If there’s a way to be proactive and potentially save lives, it’s worth looking into. Passing this resolution will help us remind our parents and guardians how important it is to keep firearms away from children.”’

The school district says they are not alone in this mission. The district is working with local and national agencies to increase awareness of gun storage.

In Virginia, it is illegal for any person to “recklessly leave a loaded, unsecured firearm in such a manner as to endanger the life or limb of any child under the age of fourteen.” Anyone who violates this law can be found guilty of a Class 1 demeanor.
