Moneta Volunteer Fire Department fundraising $40,000 for new equipment

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Moneta Volunteer Fire Department responds to more than 400 calls a year, and they need the equipment to stop house fires or respond to car crashes.

“Being volunteers, we don’t have a constant funding source,” said Assistant Chief Laird Wysor.

Bedford County helps with some of their funding, but the volunteer crew has to find the rest. Right now, they’re trying to replace tools like the “Jaws of Life,” used to free people trapped in car wrecks. Their Facebook fundraiser says, of the $40,000, they’ve only received $150.

Assistant Chief Wysor says they also need a new engine for one of their trucks.

“We have a unit on order with that comes at a price tag of almost $1.1 million,” he said. “Our normal operating budget is $325,000 a year just for various assets, our current bills and payments we have. Unfortunately, we have to finance most of our apparatus to a point.”
