Moneta Vol. Fire Dept. hosts fundraiser dinner to support fellow fighter battling cancer

MONETA, Va. (WFXR) — On Saturday, Feb. 17 folks came near and far to help one of their own in Moneta after news that one of their fellow volunteer firefighters was diagnosed with cancer.

“Oh my god this is amazing, people are lined up out the door and just continue to come through, they’re being so supportive,” said Lisa Callahan, a long-time friend of the department.

President of the Moneta Volunteer Fire Department Chris Tucker is a beloved member of the Moneta community. At the end of last year, he was diagnosed with several cancers including brain cancer. However, the community came together to support him.

“They’re going to his house to build a ramp to get in his house, he cannot walk at this point but he’s going to therapy,” Callahan said. “People are rallying around him to give him support to beat this thing, and he’s doing great, he’s fighting hard.”

On Saturday, the department took their support one step further. With Tucker being unable to work for the last month, they decided to host a fundraiser dinner to help cover his medical expenses.

“We just want to take the opportunity to give him some hope, show him that he’s loved that he’s supported that we’re they’re beside him and just want him to know how much we care and appreciate him,” said Laird Wysor, the assistant chief of Moneta’s Volunteer Fire Department.

The dinners included spaghetti or grilled chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, salad, dessert and drinks — all for $10. Members of the community and even surrounding fire departments, lined up around the building to show their support and get a meal.

“I’m a volunteer firefighter with Hardy Fire Department and we like to support each other,” said Richard Patton, a Hardy Fireman. “It looks like a great turnout, and we’re proud of everyone coming out here, it’s nice.”

Tucker spent three weeks at the VCU Medical Center and is currently at a rehab center in Richmond. His team is excitedly waiting for his return home.

“Tucker is one of those humble individuals, but he is a very silent dad. He is always in the corner, you can never find him without an infectious smile,” Assistant Chief Wysor said. “It’s just not the same without him.”

In an update from the Moneta Fire Department, they reported the dinner raised over $25,000 for Tucker and thanks the community for their contributions.

Wyser said if you would like to donate, you can do so on their website here or you can mail or bring a check to the department and they will make sure Tucker receives it.
