Monee man charged with murder in Chicago Heights fatal teen stabbing

A 50-year-old Monee man was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with a stabbing in Chicago Heights that left one teen dead and another injured.

Oronde Hardy, of the 5500 block of Manhattan-Monee Road, was identified with the assistance of license plate reader technology, according to a news release from the Chicago Heights Police Department.

David Sanchez, 13, and a 14-year-old boy were rushed to the hospital Monday afternoon after officers responded to the 1500 block of Hanover Street. Sanchez died on Tuesday from of a stab wound to his left arm, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The other boy continues to recover from injuries.

An obituary posted at Steger Memorial Chapel states Sanchez was the son of Emma Tijerina and Israel Sanchez, and had four brothers, Angela Sanchez, Victor Sanchez, Sebastian Sanchez and Adrian Sanchez.

A visitation is scheduled from 1 p.m. until time of funeral service at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Smits – Steger Memorial Chapel, 3045 Chicago Road, Steger.

Hardy’s actions were triggered by a verbal altercation, police said without elaborating. Cook County prosecutors are seeking to have him detained while the case is pending, and a hearing is scheduled Friday morning at the Cook County courthouse in Markham.
