Moldova to hold referendum on EU membership in 2024 — President Sandu

Moldova plans to hold a national referendum on applying to join the EU this coming fall, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said on March 18, as reported by Reuters.

In the referendum, citizens will vote on whether to enshrine the policy of European integration in the country’s constitution.

"EU member states are more open [to EU enlargement] than ever before, we have the necessary political will for this step, and our citizens want to be part of the EU," said Sandu.

She added that the referendum would prevent Moldova's EU aspirations from being abandoned by future government.

"It must be confirmed and enshrined in the constitution," the president insisted.

According to Sandu, the referendum could take place in October 2024, but the exact date will be decided by the Moldovan parliament.

On Dec. 14, 2023, the European Council decided to begin negotiations on EU accession with Ukraine and Moldova.
