From mold to food splashes, see the three food establishments cited by Ocean County

Out of 339 restaurants, convenience stores, cafeterias and food trucks inspected by the Ocean County Health Department since the beginning of the year, only three have a conditionally satisfactory rating, as opposed to a satisfactory rating.

According to the Health Department website, a conditionally satisfactory rating would mean that the establishment “needs improvement in several areas.”

A satisfactory rating, on the other hand, would mean that the establishment was in “substantial compliance with State Health Codes.”

An unsatisfactory rating would mean that the establishment has “serious or unsafe conditions/violations.”

None of the 339 restaurants were considered unsatisfactory. The Health Department’s inspections are updated weekly.

Violations

  • Boemio Market, also known as Boemio and Sons, at 314 Route 70 in Lakehurst was cited for 15 violations. The inspector found that the “pancetta hanging in walk-in is covered in a thick coating of whitish-colored mold.” What was described as “dark, spotty mold-like growth” was found inside the ice machine. The inspector noted that the hot unit that holds sandwiches was the same one that a previous report required the market to throw away. The report also found that many “grab and go” food items lacked labels or only had partial labels. It found a soup kettle in the bathroom and warned against washing food in the hand sink. Cloth towels instead of paper towels were also used, which is a violation, according to the report. A number of items were also broken including a leaking three bay sink, a light under the ventilation hood and the dumpster’s lid outside. The inspector recommended the market sanitize and clean daily as well as address outdoor waste oil leakage.

  • Shing Loon at 715 Bennetts Mills Road in Jackson was cited for three violations. The restaurant did not have a food safety certificate on site and paper towels at the hand sink. The inspector also recommended “more frequent cleaning” due to food residue on the hood vents.

  • Golden Crown Restaurant at 665 Bennetts Mill Road in Jackson was cited for two violations. The inspector found that knives were wedged between countertops instead of being stored in a “clean, dry place.” The report also recommended a “thorough cleaning” of the restaurant due to food splashes and debris on the floor and walls.
