Mohegan Arena celebrates 25 years with big news

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Celebrating 25 years of live entertainment and sporting events, Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, is now named the Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza.

On Thursday, local leaders, community members, and arena management gathered together to commemorate the success of the arena and unveil some exciting announcements.

As local leaders highlighted Thursday, there’s an entire generation of people who only know what life is like in NEPA with the existence of the Mohegan Arena.

But 25 years ago, this area was only used for coal lands. Now, it serves as a center for entertainment, and economic development.

Looking back at the struggles of the past,

“You’ll never be able to have an arena here. No way,” said State Representative Eddie Day Pashinski, (d) 121st district.

To celebrate today.

“But through all of the hard work, determination, and guts, now we have this incredible building,” Pashinski added.

More than two decades ago, opponents argued the arena would be a burden to taxpayers. Despite this, the Mohegan Arena persevered, bringing development and growth to the community.

“This area was nothing more than coal lands. It was not used there were no roads, there was nothing here,” Pashinkski continued.

Now, this part of Wilkes-Barre Township serves as a hub for business.

“Look at the impact that this building and this progress that we have in Wilkes-Barre Township and throughout our community,” said John Jablowski, Senior Vice President of M&T Bank.

25 years later, the arena has brought in millions of people to enjoy musicians, hockey games, various entertainment shows, and comedians alike, serving as a staple, in NEPA.

“The arena really represents the fortitude and the perseverance, of Northeastern Pennsylvania,” Jablowski added.

To celebrate that impact and progress, the arena announced its 25th-anniversary community concert, featuring the rock band: The Yacht-ley Crew.

That concert will take place on September 21 and tickets are starting at $25 and can be purchased on the Mohegan Arena website or Ticketmaster.

Also highlighted Thursday is the Wilkes Barre Township’s semi-quincentennial anniversary celebration.

To commemorate 250 years, a celebration featuring food, live music, and more will be hosted in the Mohegan Sun Arena parking lot on August 24 and entry is free of charge.
