Mohave County to target speeders near Skywalk

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) — Mohave County authorities will be targeting motorists who ignore speed limits on their way to the Grand Canyon Skywalk.

The roads that lead to popular tourist destination on the Hualapai reservation have posted speed limits and signs that warn of rough roads. But authorities say motorists often ignore that because of the remoteness of the area.

Sgt. Don Bischoff says a special weeklong traffic enforcement detail will start Thursday. It coincides with the Chinese New Year, a major holiday that honors the lunar new year. Many Chinese have taken commercial tours to the Skywalk from Las Vegas.

Bischoff says nearly one-third of the 100 traffic crashes on Pierce Ferry and Diamond Bar roads over three years have resulted in serious injury or death.
