Liverpool Fan View: Salah is Klopp's best signing

Liverpool blogger Kieran Beckles picks out four players Klopp has snapped up – and puts them in order.

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah broke Robbie Fowler’s record after the African forward scored his ninth Premier League goal in 12 games on Saturday. The 25-year-old has netted four times in his last two top-flight games. His opener at West Ham showcased his blistering pace. Salah broke the deadlock at the weekend with a curled finish on the edge of Southampton’s penalty area. His second was a clinical finish inside the box. His variety of goals gives Jurgen Klopp an abundance of versatility. Salah’s ability to cut in from the wing and make runs behind the opposition defence make him a dangerous weapon. He has already been heralded as the signing of season. Given his record of 14 goals in 18 games, Salah is the pick of Klopp’s additions so far.

Sadio Mane

Salah narrowly edges Sadio Mane as Klopp’s best signing. Liverpool spent £30m to sign the Senegal international from Southampton. The African forward scored a brilliant goal on his Premier League debut in a 4-3 win against Arsenal at the start of the 2016-17 season. It set the tone for what has been an eye-catching start to his Liverpool career. Mane finished with 13 goals and five assists in 31 games to help Liverpool finish in the top four. The Reds struggled in his absence through the African Cup of Nations and a knee problem ito leave Klopp’s side lacking pace in the second half of the campaign.

Georginio Wijnaldum

Liverpool signed Georginio Wijnaldum in a £25m deal from Newcastle United in 2016 summer transfer window. The Netherlands international has bolstered Klopp’s midfield options. His impact has been subtle. Wijnaldum’s deft passing and work rate have made him a welcome addition but he has some work to do to be considered a great signing. The challenge for the former PSV Eindhoven midfielder will be adding more goals to his game. He has netted seven times in 52 games in all competitions in his Anfield career. To put that return in context, Wijnaldum scored 18 goals in 42 outings in his last season in Holland.

Joel Matip

Joel Matip has struggled like the rest of the Liverpool defence this season. There has been a certain amount of scorn at Klopp’s measly spending on defensive recruits. While the Liverpool boss needs to solidify his back four, the addition of Matip on a free transfer was a smart piece of business (unlike Ragnar Klavan and Loris Karius). The Cameroon international has questions to answers regarding his leadership skills at the back. A lack of organisation has cost Liverpool this season and Matip has to accept some blame.

The rest: Marko Grujic, Ragnar Klavan, Alex Manninger, Dominic Solanke, Andy Robertson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Loris Karius and Steven Caulker.
