Modesto police amp up staff to tackle organized retail theft

In a series of ongoing organized retail theft sting operations that started on Black Friday, the Modesto Police Department made 50 arrests and recovered more than $30,000 in stolen merchandise so far. Det. Jacob Hook said these types of crimes have been on the rise in recent years. “It happens all throughout the city,” Hook said. “Typically, we’ve seen the folks that are doing organized retail theft are also associated with stealing vehicles and breaking into vehicles.”
