‘Modern Family’ Casts Transgender Child Actor
Modern Family, a show that has never been shy about breaking down barriers, is doing it again. For the first time, the series has cast an openly transgender child actor.
Eight-year-old actor Jackson Millarker will appear in Wednesday’s episode as Lily’s friend Tom. Lily, of course. is the daughter of same-sex couple Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). In the episode titled “A Stereotypical Day”, Lily invites Tom over for a play date.
A partial synopsis by ABC of the episode reveals that the scenes with Millarker focus on acceptance. From the synopsis: “Cam and Mitchell have always felt they were the most open, non-judgmental and supportive parents. However, when they overhear Lily insulting her new friend, they have to take a quick look in the mirror before they teach her a lesson about acceptance.”
Director Ryan Case posted the Instagram photo below with Jackson ahead of the episode’s airing.
Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9 PM on ABC.
