What happens when two teenagers become famous for their youthful adventures and almost X-rated photos, and then one day they start to grow up? Things get ugly. And that’s exactly what has happened to Alexis Ren and Jay Alvarrez, the beautiful couple with perfectly bronzed skin, highlighted hair, and toned bodies that seemed to be sculpted for each other — and for Internet fame.

The youngsters (Ren is 19 and Alvarrez is 23) became famous apart but reached celebrity status when they coupled up and started sharing drool-worthy social media posts and YouTube videos of them kissing on the beach and jumping out of planes — also while kissing. Their endless adventures and pricey pads are responsible for many followers tagging their photos #relationshipgoals, and their lives were so envied by all that Hyundai and Express even hired them for ads.

They were crazy in love when this all took off a few years ago. But things clearly have gone sour in the past few months. They stopped following each other on social media platforms — that’s how millennials break up with each other — and they were missing from each other’s adventures.

“When people in your life have good intentions and then suddenly don’t have good intentions, and you get your heart broken, you have to learn and reflect off of that and ask yourself, ‘Where did I go wrong?'” Ren told Cosmopolitan a few weeks ago. Like, ‘How did I let myself get treated like that?’ I got my heart broken and I was like, ‘OK, wow, I need to just step back and take my power back.’ So for the last six months, I’ve had to really do a lot of reflecting and a lot of soul-searching.”

As if that didn’t spell it out for you, Ren, now a mature and wise 20-year-old, is getting real about the split, and it’s not as pretty as her glowing face. This past weekend, she tweeted, “that time you confused a lesson for a soulmate,” and continued, “It’s crazy how wrong you can be about someone.”

As her 604,000 followers caught on and started clamoring for the truth, she said they could ask her anything.

When one follower asked who ended it, she confirmed that she did. “Pushed me to my limits so I broke it so he wouldn’t get blamed for ending it,” Ren wrote.

Apparently, the relationship wasn’t good for “his business” anymore.

She said she felt something was wrong, hinting that maybe love wasn’t as much of a priority for him as it was for her. Basically, if kisses and canoodling equaled dollars, he’d do as much as needed, but only onscreen. This is contrary to how they portrayed their relationship in their 2016 interview with Cosmopolitan, in which they described their first date.

“I took her out for a perfect first day when we hung out,” Alvarrez recalled.

“It was the mecca of all dates. It was the perfect weather, even a puppy was on the beach,” Ren agreed. But they also admitted he didn’t pay on that date, as he didn’t have enough dough. Maybe that should have been the first red flag.

When a follower asked if it was all fake, Ren promised that in the beginning, their relationship was real, but “fame changes people.”

She told fans she blocked him. And then things got weird. Like shaming-his-man-parts weird. Uh. OK.

Let this be a lesson to you: Not everything is as peppy and perfect as it appears on social media. Oh, and, if you’re interested, apparently Ren’s on Bumble.
