MLB announced on Friday that it is suspending San Diego Padres relief pitcher Jose Torres 100 games for a domestic violence arrest from December.

The suspension is retroactive and will cover the remainder of the season. Torres will not appeal the suspension

“My office has completed its investigation into the allegation that Jose Torres violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” a statement from commissioner Rob Manfred reads. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Torres violated the Policy and should be subject to discipline in the form of an unpaid suspension that will cover the balance of the season.”

Torres allegedly pointed a gun at his girlfriend

Torres was arrested in December in Phoenix. Police say Torres kicked down a door, punched a hole in another door and pointed a gun at the woman he lived with during an argument. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage and making threats or intimidation.

The Padres placed Torres on the MLB’s restricted list at the beginning of spring training. He has not played this year. The team released a statement Friday supporting Manfred’s decision.

Padres support Torres’ suspension

“We fully support the decision by the commissioner’s office to suspend Jose Torres for violating the joint MLB-MLBPA domestic violence policy,” the statement reads. “We will continue to support the league’s efforts to educate players and prevent instances like this from occurring in the future.”

Torres appeared in 62 games last season, posting a 4.21 ERA with 63 strikeouts and 16 walks over 68.1 innings.
